The conflicts caused a halt in construction for almost 100 years. Shortly after, Pisa fought wars against Genoa, Lucca and Florence. As a result, the tower started to tilt toward the south. By the time the builders finished the second of eight stories in 1178, the tower’s foundation had begun to settle unevenly. The ground beneath the tower was composed of clay, fine sand and shells from the Arno and Serchio rivers that frame the city of Pisa. Perhaps, the site itself may have been the root cause of the problem. That was literally the only vegan food there.Problems arose shortly after construction began on the white marble bell tower. BTW, Catalina Eddie’s–the quick-service pizza place near the Tower of Terror–has nothing vegan to offer, unless you’d like a piece of undressed lettuce. PR supposedly has vegan pizza, but we weren’t able to try it or verify that it’s true. They close at 4 pm! No one could figure that one out. Meanwhile, across the street from MM is PizzeRizzo, where we foolishly tried to get dinner one evening. A great experience, and sorry we couldn’t repeat it, which we tried to do on a walk-up, but they were booked. A really good meal, and I’m happy to report that MM’s staff and procedures were much better organized than I’ve ever experienced them. My husband had some other chocolate dessert (he’s vegetarian, so he branched out a little there). The bread is vegan (and served with olive oil, also vegan), and I had chocolate Tofutti for dessert. My husband and I both had delicious spaghetti marinara. And I did indeed go to MM for lunch last week. That’s my comment re ’50s Prime Time on December 26.
